Rathangan Success in Delany Cup 2011

The annual Delany Cup hosted by Athy Tennis Club has become a regular fixture in the calender for all neighbouring tennis clubs. This year saw our biggest represnetation with 15 RTC members competing between the B and C sections. The format of this "mixed doubles" competition was changed slightly this year due to the larger number of me competing in the B section. This meant that the qualifing stages for the B-section were played as mens and ladies doubles and the draw for mixed pairings took place at the semi-final stage. The C-section was run as before with the mixed pairings drawn at the beginning of the competition.

John Goff, Pat Gaughan and Henry Byrne

The draw for both the mens and ladies doubles threw up some very strong pairings and with 15 representatives from Rathangan Tennis Club, it was surprising that the only all-Rathangan team drawn together on the day were Richie Ryan & Pat Gaughan. When Rathangans No.1 seed, John Goff was paired with Eddie Brien of Athy, Catherine Hackett with Joan Hyland (Athy) and Mary McCrann with Siobhan Kirk (Abbeyleix), the chances of having someone from Rathangan involved in the semi-final stages were greatly increased. Other representatives involved in the mix included Tom Gallaher, Marius, Liam Tienan, Henry Byrne, Tracy. As it transpired, after the qualifing stages and subsequent draw for the mixed pairings, 3 of the 4 teams that battled it out at the semi-final stage contained a Rathangan player. Catherine Hackett with Leo Tinkler(Portlaois), Mary McCrann with Ciaran Walsh (Abbeyleix) and John Goff with Joan Hyland (Athy) played some really wonderfull tennis in their entertaining and hard fought eoncounters. It was John along with his playing partner Joan who progressed to the final overcoming Mary and Ciaran in the Semi-final where they would face Siobhan Kirk (Abbeyleix) & Eddie Brien (Athy) who narrowly beat Catherine and Leo in the other semi-final.

In the final, John and Joan played very well together and seemed to compliment each others net and baseline play. Early on in this encounter it appeared that John (Mr. Consistency) Goff had met his match from the baseline with Siobhan Kirk returning evrything he could through at her and made sure every point had to be won. With most of the games going to duce, this was a high quality closely fough match with very little between the teams. In the end, the superior skill of both John and Joan made sure that Eddie and Siobhan would have to wait until next year to have a chance of winning out the B-section. So congatulations to John Goff and his playing partner Joan Hyland on winning what turned out to be a very competitive B section in this years competition.

The C-section competitors were drawn into 2 groups for the qualifing stages of this mixed doubles section. Again Rathangan Tennis Club featured strongly with Ronnie Heffernan, Aine Doyle, John Gallaher, Avril McCrann, and Mora flying thrown into the

pot for the draw. The overall stndard of tennis in this section has really improved over the past two years and it is no longer a hunting ground for beginners as some of the players involved, although may have lost a little in the speed department, they more than make up for in the speed of thought and skill deparment. Ronnie Heffernan was draw with Peter McDermott (Athy) and along with Aine Doyle, probably represented Rathangans best cahnces of getting to the final stages. however, nobody could have predicted what was about to happen as Ronnie along with her playing partner Peter McDermott steadily got to grips with each of the opposing teams and reached the final with little fuss. They then then proceeded to give a masterclass in the final overcoming the challenge of Oliva and John.

With the countback  rules on the number of games won throughout the competition, there was definitly going to be a Rathangan name on the cup this year, so all that remained to find out was ...was it going to be B-section winner John Goff or C-section winner Ronnie Heffernan. In the end, the C-section winners of Ronnie Heffernan and Peter McDermott narrowly shaded it and were crowned Delany Cup Winners 2011.
